High Demand for Translators

An article in August, 31, 2014, edition of  The Dallas Morning News  on page 2D discusses career opportunities for individuals who can translate business documents from one language to another. Jobs are expected to grow 46 percent over the next 8 years. The pay ranges from $50k to over $100k based on salary, hourly or amount per job or page.

Individuals fluent in English and another languages such as German, French, Chinese,  tand Arabic are in demand by foreign organizations doing business in the U.S.  Knowing how to work with text is a must - a skill beyond simply being able to speak two or more languages.

Please comment or email me at glynjordan@gmail.com if you have advice for individuals considering becoming a translator.

Rehabilitation Centers

Well, I am back at The Forum Rehabilitation Center in North Dallas.  After a total knee replacement went well, I had a set-back which greatly reduced my mobility. While observing the people that makes the rehab function, I am thinking that a rehab center is a great place to work.

Here is a list of folks that make my stay helpful as I recuperate:
Housekeepers
LVNs and RNs
Physical Therapists
Occupational Therapists
Admissions persons
Accountants
Food Servers and Preparers
Operations Managers
Human Resources people

All these positions require good personal skills and an eagerness to serve others. If you enjoy helping people in need and are willing to go the extra mile in your work, perhaps you should consider a job in a rehabilitation facility.

Are You the Reason You Are Unemployed?

Recently an individual came to my job counseling office at the North Dallas Shared Ministries.  The individual avoided eye contact, was looking down, and had little to say.  When asked if he wanted a job, he said in a low voice while looking down that he did.

I asked the individual if he were the hiring manager, would he be hired.  I did not get a positive answer.

A young man who is a university intern told me the story of one of his peer group who had received a job offer then had it rescinded when he was seen sleeping during a company meeting.

Often a job candidate’s conduct during an interview or while visiting a potential employer determines if a job is offered or not.  I have published a number of blogs describing proper conduct during the interview process.  If a person really wants job, then it is critical that he/she exhibit the qualities that the employer is seeking for the open position.

My message here is simple, if you want to be hired, you must present yourself as the ideal candidate.  You should enter the hiring situation with a positive attitude that is focused on understanding the job requirements and reflect interest in the hiring organization and the open position.  You can always reject a job offer, but the objective is to get the offer!

Please comment in this bIog or email at mailto:glynjordan@gmail.com your experience in getting hired.

Thanks!

Top 100 Best Jobs in 2014

You may find it helpful, but not surprising, to review the top 100 best jobs in 2014.  Jobs in computer technologies and health care lead this list!

All jobs aren’t created equal. In fact, some are simply better than the rest. U.S. News 100 Best Jobs of 2014 offer a mosaic of employment opportunity, good salary, manageable work-life balance and job security. Some careers offer just the right mix of these components – for instance, nearly 40 percent of our picks are health care jobs – but the list also includes strong showings from occupations in the social services and business sectors. And for the first time, our No. 1 pick is a technology job. Read more on how we rank the best jobs, and check out our complete list.

Education or perhaps re-education is a key to being able to land one of these jobs.  I have posted a number of blogs highlighting ‘STEM’ jobs – science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

I suggest that you take time to carefully view this list as you consider possible career objectives.  I suggest that you evaluate your personal strengths and desires and then map them to this list and hopefully find a fit!

Please comment in this bIog or email at mailto:glynjordan@gmail.com if you find that your present job is on this list.

Thanks!

Career Expos

Advertised in The Dallas Morning News August 3, 2014, edition on page 6J is a Career Expo being held at the Richardson Civic Center on Tuesday, August 12, 2014.  I am thinking that such career expos are being conducted at cities throughout the U.S.

The ads that got my attention had two banners.  One banner promoted Engineering, Technology and Security Clearance positions and Nursing and Allied Health positions on the other banner.  The expo also included free resume critiques and a free job search seminar.

Companies providing job interviews include high tech, military contractors and hospitals in the Dallas area.

I encourage job seekers to use a search engine with the argument “career expo” to find career expos in their geographic area of interest.

Please comment in this bIog or email at mailto:glynjordan@gmail.com if you have found such career expos helpful to your job search.

Thanks!
