Churches Assist Unemployed Find Jobs

A front page article in the September 23, 2012, edition of The Dallas Morning News - “Shifting Role Lifts Souls” by Eric Aasen describes how a program administered by Lake Highlands United Methodist Church (LHUMC) assisted the unemployed find jobs.

LHUMC set up an online job board, established emergency food, networked with Sunday School groups, and offered baby-sitting services to church members seeking employment.  In addition, the church provided assistance to non-church members.

There numerous examples of churches of all faiths providing employment assistance.   Below is just one example of such programs:

Cascade United Methodist Church welcomed U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis on Oct. 5 at a well-attended job symposium aimed at getting Americans, especially Atlanta-area residents, back to work.

One comment in the DMN article that got my attention was the statement that individuals in need frequently do not ask for assistance.  There are many organizations that are eager and equipped to provide job counseling assistance.

An associate of mine at North Dallas Shared Ministries said that she and her husband offer job assistance at her church weekly, but very few individuals take advantage of this free service.

I encourage all job seekers to ask for assistance from religious organizations that provide free services.  Many individuals in similar circumstances have found the help provided by such groups to be an important step in finding employment.

Please share with readers of this blog or email me at glynjordan@gmail.com if you have received assistance from a religious organization.

Job Hunting and Smart Phones

According to an advertisement in The Dallas Morning News on page 1J in the September 16, 2012, edition- “Your job search just got easier.”   The ad suggests that job seekers should to go m.dallasnews.com/jobs and scroll down to Search jobs.

I have tried the link on my iPhone4 and was successful in getting access to categories of jobs in the Dallas area.  Many of the jobs listed have contact information to the hiring organizations. For some organizations, you may contact them directly by email or phone.

Technology continues provide improved techniques for finding a job.  For example on the same page, 1J, I found the following link to job tips:   http://career-advice.monster.com/job-interview/careers.aspx.  The monster.com  website provides links to many informative articles on relevant job search topics.

Please share with readers of this blog or email me at glynjordan@gmail.com your suggestions as to how job seekers can use their smart phones to land a job.

Top 5 Small Business Ventures of 2012

As readers of this blog may know, I am an adjunct professor for the University of Phoenix (UOP).  The alumni magazine, Phoenix Focus September 2012 edition, includes the article “Top 5 Small Business Ventures of 2012” on page 9 by Julie Wilson.

I think that the following ideas may be helpful for new and existing entrepreneurs:

·        Mobile app designers – 72 percent of small businesses use mobile apps.  Quoting Anita Campbell, CEO and editor of Small Business Trends, “If you have a business that services small businesses, you should think about creating an app or making sure your website can be seen well in a mobile browser.”

·        Services for seniors – There’s a booming population – the senior population. Americans 65 have an average of 18.8 years life expectancy so this population will require assistance in meeting their needs as they age, e.g. adult day care, shopping services and perhaps even going back to school!

·        Little luxuries – Research by the National Retail Federation shows a gradual resurgence in discretionary spending by consumers, e.g. eating out, gourmet coffee, hair cut and coloring, nail salons.  It is amazing how many nail salons are located throughout Dallas.

·        Home furnishings – According to the Chinese lunar calendar, 2012 is the “Year of the Dragon” and is a good time to get married and have children.  IBM anticipates that in-store sales of home furnishings items will increase by 8 percent and online sales will increase by 28.4 percent.  Small businesses can tap into this trend and recommends working with such sites as eBay and Amazon.

·        Food – According to the National Restaurant Association total restaurant sales are expected to reach a record high of $632 billion in 2012! Even thought the failure rate for new restaurant opening is about 60 percent the first year, there is money to be made from the eat-out crowd.

Please comment in the blog or email me at glynjordan@gmail.com your ideas and suggestions about being involved in a part of small business.

Thanks, Glyn

Get Ahead at the Office!

A reader of this blog emailed me the following article about conduct at the office.

7 Smart Ways to Get Ahead at the Office

Do you always feel behind at work? Is there always something that gets left undone? Are you the one that’s always behind schedule? Do you marvel at those that are always on top of their game? Why do you keep getting passed over for a promotion? Change your fate today! We’ve got seven smart, simple ways to get ahead at the office.
1.     Singletask
Don’t listen to the multitasking hype — doing one thing at a time ensures that at least one thing will get done. Minimize browsers, close extra tabs, and log out of Facebook. If you can turn off all the noise, you will get your tasks complete. Word to the wise: Those who say they do more when multitasking are usually incorrect.
It might not be what you want to hear, but muscling through is one way to ensure that things get done at the office. Afraid you’re going to be behind? Feeling overwhelmed? Come early. Stay late. Hit up the office on a weekend. Work smart, but don’t forget that working hard will get you there, too. And convince yourself that you care enough to do so. You won’t get points for being at the office the longest, but if you work harder and smarter than everyone around you, you’re sure to be a shining star.
3.     Expect Nothing
Life isn’t fair. Work isn’t fair. And don’t expect it to be otherwise. Even if you don’t work in a cutthroat industry, you’re definitely not doing yourself any favors if you expect people to notice and recognize your work. Go above and beyond because that’s what you want to do, not because you’ll be recognized for it. You won’t be rewarded for doing what you’re told — in the end, you’re only rewarded for doing what you do best.
4.     Speak Up
If you do something great, highlight it. Don’t be a braggart, but do make it clear that you enjoy your work and intend to get ahead because you want to. Speak up in meetings. Speak up when you do something well. And don’t be afraid to ask for a pay raise if and when you deserve one.
One of the best ways that you can be sure to get ahead at the office is to listen. If you have the capacity to listen to those around you while still completing your work, you’re sure to get ahead in your job and professional relationships. It’s a great benefit to know what’s going on around the office, but don’t get overly involved nor allow it to affect your work. That’s about as much job security as you can be guaranteed these days.
It might sound elementary, and maybe even trivial, but it’s a fact: Offices are bad for you, and bad for your health. Human bodies and minds weren’t meant to sit in awkward ergonomic chairs for years on end, and our eyes weren’t meant to stare at glowing rectangles under the filter of greenish fluorescent overhead light. Sure, it looks professional but it’s not natural. And you have to fight it. If you are aware that your work life is killing you, you can make better decisions about the ideal way to get your work done. Lose the crappy attitude, and work with your company to create an environment that’s life-giving for you.
Always be present, presentable, and make active professional decisions. Get ahead the right way — with a good attitude, an open mind, accurate work, and a team mindset. Making active decisions ensures that you are in control of what happens to you and that you’re not a passive agent. Anyone can complain, but it takes a leader to fix problems.
