Busy Working Moms – A Balancing Act

An article on page 1J of the May 30, 2010, edition of The Dallas Morning News, by Amy Winter writing for Creators Syndicate, discusses the many roles played by working moms. Amy states that as companies eliminate positions in order to save money, many working moms are taking on more responsibilities. “Longer work days and increased workloads take away time with kids.”  The article quotes Mary Delaney of CareerBuilder’s “What we’re seeing from these moms is a great deal of resourcefulness and resilience as they provide for their families ….”

Here are some suggestions for working moms by Delaney:
1.      Interact with other working moms – A support network is a great asset.
2.      Investigate flexible working options – Such schedules should not impact careers.
3.      Make a schedule – A plan can budget your time efficiently.
4.      Use family time – Time with children should take priority over emails.
5.      Plan to have ‘me time’ – Some personal time is important to moms.

If you are a working mom, please share how you manage work and family time with other readers of this blog.

Maintain Qualified Work and Personal References

I provided job counseling today to several out of work individuals. Two of my clients had lost their jobs because of absence from work or inability to adequately perform their jobs.

I asked them if they had a reference from their previous employer. They said that they had lost contact with employees that they knew. One client said that the employees she knew had left the organization and she had no contact information. One client told me that her only reference was her husband.

My advice to them was that they should attempt to contact someone who could provide a creditable reference. I believe that almost all hiring organizations will ask applicants for a reference from a previous employer.

My suggestion to all readers of this blog is that they negotiate business and personal references. One never knows when the unemployment event may occur.

Please share how you have obtained employment references from a previous job with readers of this blog.

Texas Adds Jobs!

An article in the front page article on May 22, 2010, of The Dallas Morning News, by Brendan Case proclaims that Texas employers expanded non-farm payrolls by 32,500 jobs in April 2010.  The state has gained more than 91,600 jobs the first four months of 2010 after losing 350,000 jobs in 2009.

I am hoping that you are a part of  this good news story. Perhaps the unemployed from other states will be contemplating a move to Texas.  Based on the old cliché “it's an ill wind that blows nobody any good”, I still think that the oil spill in the Gulf brings job opportunities.

Please share your job search successes with other readers of this blog.

Are Your Skills Obsolete?

An article in the May 16, 2010, edition of The Dallas Morning News, on page 33A by Catherine Rampell with The New York Times, describes a woman who lost her job after 30 years of doing administrative work.   Rampell argues that a number of factors are at work here.  First, during an economic turn-down, organizations are forced to reduce their staffs.  In addition, poor economic conditions give organizations cover for eliminating marginal performing workers.  And finally, advances in technology continue to replace humans in business tasks.

The article provides no easy solutions for unemployed because of one of more of these factors.   I think that it is important for such workers to understand their situation and develop a plan to upgrade their skills or to learn new skills. As has been said “denial” is not a river in Egypt and does not improve personal situations.

Please share your thoughts about dealing with obsolete skills with other readers of this blog.

Keys to Happiness

In a recent sermon my pastor, Reverend Mark Craig of Highland Park United Methodist Church, outlined five points that can lead to happiness.  I thought that I would share them with readers of this blog.

1.  Find someone to love and who also loves you in return
2.  Find something to do -- a job -- vocation --  hobby
3.  Maintain a positive attitude toward yourself, others, and the world
4.  Find someone to forgive and do not carry any grudges
5.  Find someone that you can help

I think these simple suggestions can have an impact on daily lives, and I encourage readers of this blog to consider them as directions to happiness.

Thanks to All Mothers – Especially Working Mothers

I remember when I started first grade at the age of five, my mother returned to college – Baylor University. She had been helping my father on the farm by driving a tractor. My mother’s dad observed her and told her that she had much more potential than driving a tractor and that he expected more for her.

This was the day my mother began actions that resulted in her entering school at Baylor University. She spent many years, teaching first graders, raising her son, and being a homemaker. I frankly do not know how she did it. She attended night school one night a week, traveling to attend three hours of class and returning late at night in time to sleep a few hours before making our breakfast and returning to the classroom. Her summer vacation consisted of classes five days a week at Baylor. My mother completed her BS and MS degrees in Elementary Education! Generations of Hubbard first grade students were her pupils.

I am very proud of my mother’s dedication and drive to improve herself, provide for her family, and teach hundreds of students who still remember her with great appreciation and admiration.

Please share your thoughts about your mother with other readers of this blog.

Nursing – A Great Opportunity!

The Dallas Morning News Sunday, May 2, 2010, issue, “Nursing Offers Possibilities” on page 1J by NewUSA discusses career potential in nursing. Here is a key quotation from the article:

“Accelerated nursing programs are idea for people who want to do something with the education they already have, or who find that their degrees don’t offer as many opportunities as they had hoped,” says Andrea Higham, director of the Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future. “These accelerated programs put people on a fast track to becoming a nurse, and the nursing profession also benefits by attracting more individuals with diverse backgrounds.

Please share your experience in pursuing a career in nursing with readers of this blog.

Oil Clean-UP Jobs

The oil being spilled in the Gulf is most frightening! The cleanup is going to require a long time and will be expensive. I would think that many skills will be required. If you are looking for a job and are somewhat adventuresome, I suggest that you pursue this opportunity by going to Google and enter Gulf Coast Staffing.

Please share with readers of this blog if you are successful in helping the U.S. deal with this major disaster.
