Do You Really Want A Job?

Many job seekers say that they really want a job, but when a job opportunity appears, they frequently state that the job is not for them.  An employment ad in The Dallas Morning News December 30, 2012, edition on page 1J lists the following attributes of successful job seekers for BBU Rockwall:

·        Understand product freshness and quality demanded by our customers
·        Be willing to work flexible hours (including weekends/holidays as required)
·        Develop technical business and leadership skills through position rotation and business assignments
·        Train and help co-workers advance their skills
·        Be a resource of information for other associates
·        Solve problems and make decisions
·        Maintain good housekeeping and cleanliness of the facility
·        Understand that plant safety and security is everyone’s responsibility.

While this job posting is for process and maintenance technicians, I think that the stated attributes of successful job seekers applies to almost any position.  I am suggesting that if you really want a job, you should give more attention to the requirements of the hiring organization rather than your own personal desires.

Home for Christmas

Are you going home for Christmas?  Many are going home to visit with family and friends and stay just for the holidays.   However, many others go home because of job lay-offs and/or their inability to find employment.

If you are among the unemployed, hopefully at home you will find support and encouragement.  What should you do?  I have published many blogs concerning job search strategies, resume construction, interviewing techniques, and networking.

Here are my suggestions:

·        *   Relax and enjoy the holidays
·        *   Make a New Year’s resolutions to become employed
·        *   Consider getting a job first and the salary and the position second
·        *   Research jobs openings and locations
·        *   Consider relocating in pursuing job opportunities
·        *   Don’t let your pride keep you unemployed!

Please share with readers of this blog or email me at glynjordan@gmail.com your experiences if have returned home and found employment.

Thanks.   Glyn

The P Plan for a Job Search

An article in The Dallas Morning News, December 16, 2012, edition on Page 1J, “Biggest Blunders of Home-Base Job Seekers, by Christine Durst and Michael Haaren of Creators Syndicate discusses what job searchers should not do when applying for home-based jobs.  The writers suggest that a job seeker should not:

Call the employer about an advertised job

Complain online about a company’s hiring practices

Get discouraged or offended when employers don’t respond

However, the article does not provide advice as to what job seekers should do!  My minster in his sermon today provided advice to all, and I am thinking that the advice is appropriate for job seekers.  Here is his P Plan:

Plan Perfectly – Develop a plan to find a job

Proceed Positively – Avoid being discouraged when you are ignored by a potential employer

Persevere Persistently – Keep on keeping on and work your plan

These P’s seem rather simple, but as golfers often say “half the game is mental.”

Please share with readers of this blog or email me at glynjordan@gmail.com if you find these three P’s helpful to your job search.

A Gift to Give

This is the season when we typically think of family, friends, and other folks in need.  So how will you respond?  What gifts will you give?

For many, a Christmas card or a telephone call is all that it takes to make their day.  For others, especially those in need, clothing, food, money or other substantive items are appropriate gifts.

I think that the giver receives a feeling of the season as much as the receiver.  I encourage you to use this time of the year to express your love, mend fences, renew friendships, and lend a helping hand.

Please share with readers of this blog or email me at glynjordan@gmail.com your suggestions for a gift to give.
