Career Planning and Flexibility

When I was attending my MBA classes at SMU (BC – Before Cox), my professor, Dr. A.W. Baker always talked about career planning and flexibility in his classes.  I was never sure what he really meant.

The article in The Dallas Morning News in the February 7, 2012, edition on page 1D by Jim Landers, “Oil Boom Shifts Midland into Overdrive”, perhaps is an example of what he was telling his students.

Thanks to the oil boom, Midland has an unemployment rate of 3.9 percent with retail sales up 26.1 percent.  Subway is offering a $1,000 bonus to new employees that come to work on-time for six months.  However, housing is now limited with few vacancies in apartments, houses, and hotels.

Perhaps Dr. Baker was suggesting that if your career is going nowhere and you need a job, you should be willing to be flexible and perhaps move or change vocations.

I am not suggesting that everyone hurry to Midland to pursue a job; however, I am thinking that if your career “is stuck in the mud” that you consider being more flexible as you consider your employment alternatives.

What does your career look-like?

Thanks.

Glyn
