What are the Fasting Growing Occupations?

What are the fasting growing occupations?  Below is a table published by U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Here what I conclude from this table?

·        Many jobs do not require college degrees.

·        Healthcare related occupations appear to be attractive.

·        Construction and trades jobs are in demand.

·         I am surprised that technology jobs do not make the list.

Summer Jobs for Teens

An article in the May 16, 2012, edition of The Dallas Morning News on page 2D by Claudia Buck, The Sacramento Bee, “Summer Hiring Heats Up for Teens” suggests that teens begin immediately seeking summer employment.  It states that hiring is expected to be better than during the recession and there will be less competition from adults looking for part-time seasonal work.

Here are some job search suggestions.

·        

     1. Check job postings online and in newspapers – http://www.snagajob.com lists hourly jobs by city in all 50 states

·         

    2. Try volunteering – contact veterinary clinics, zoos, nursing homes, hospitals, senior residences, school programs, day camps, church groups

·         

    3. Ask – ask school counselors, neighbors, friends, and parents

·       

*        4. Cold calls – visit businesses and retail stores

My grandchildren have landed internships at hospitals and businesses by calling and asking. Adults with contacts are helpful as well.

Are Hotels a Shelter for Job Seekers?

An article in the May 14 – 20, 2012, edition of Bloomberg Businessweek on page 18 by Anna-Louise Jackson and Anthony Feld  “Hotels Are Hiring as Americans Hit the Road” points out that many hotels are becoming busy as Americans resume their travels.  After several years of slow growth, things are beginning to improve in the hospitality industry.  In a previous blog I wrote about opportunities on cruise ships.

So what jobs are available?  There is a wide variety of job openings. Many of the jobs pay low wages and few benefits; however, there are also paths to managerial positions.  Many properties provide training for new employees.  Hotel operators are always looking for individuals who know how to treat travelers and vacationers.  A welcoming smile and a pleasant greeting is what all individuals appreciate when they are seeking shelter for the night.

Learning How to Find a Job

We are not born knowing how to find a job.  As with all worthwhile activities, learning and practice are required to become proficient.

When I was doing research for my dissertation, I studied the job search seminars being conducted by the Texas Workforce Commission.  I found that individuals who attended the seminars obtained jobs faster than others.  In addition, measures of locus of control and life satisfaction improved after training.

This past week I contacted the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) office in Richardson, Texas, and was pleased to hear that the job search seminars are continuing with a dedicated and experienced facilitator.  I am sure that such seminars are conducted at TWC offices throughout Texas and at similar state organizations throughout the U.S.

Since such job search training is being conducted at many churches and civil organizations, I encourage all unemployed readers of this blog to take advantage of this type of training for little or no charge.
